Secure by Design Living Lab

Bournemouth University (BU) and Synoptix, partnering with BAE Systems, have secured funding from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) to collaborate on a Secure by Design (SbD) project. Dstl, the science and technology arm of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), provides critical expertise and solutions for national security.

The Living Lab project follows on from a previous project led by Dr Duncan Ki-Aries and Prof Huseyin Dogan, along with Dr Eylem Thron from Mima, which centred on developing and evaluating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to demonstrate how safety, security, and human factors analysis can be integrated into SbD requirements practices.

The Living Lab project will implement a Secure by Design ‘Living Lab’ where an exemplar software tool and a coherent Secure by Design approach, grounded in best practices in security, safety, system, and human factors engineering, is applied within the delivery team, and lessons learned from the ‘lab’ inform not just the delivery team’s Secure by Design activities and outcomes, and the activities and outcomes relevant to UK Defence more generally.
