{"id":1103,"date":"2025-11-24T19:43:04","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T19:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/?p=1103"},"modified":"2025-11-24T19:43:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T19:43:05","slug":"bournemouth-university-receives-2-3-million-in-funding-to-boost-regional-and-national-cybersecurity-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/?p=1103","title":{"rendered":"Bournemouth University receives \u00a32.3 million in funding to boost regional and national cybersecurity skills"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cybersecurity.bournemouth.ac.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Security-Image.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bournemouth University has been awarded nearly \u00a32.3 million by the Office for Students to develop a new&nbsp;Cyber Competence Centre that will address regional and national cyber skills gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as upgrading the university\u2019s existing facilities, the investment will be used to launch a new,&nbsp;AI-powered, Security Operations Centre of the Future (SOCOF) for students to learn how to detect and respond to realistic cyber threats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>There is a well-documented shortage of digital and cyber skills in the UK,<\/em> and we are seeing an increasing number of high-profile cyber-attacks on businesses such as those on Marks and Spencer and Co-Op,\u201d said Professor Nan Jiang, Head of BU\u2019s School of Computing and Engineering.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cRapid advances in AI have intensified the threats and increased the pressure on cyber professionals. Through the new centre,<em> we will provide immersive critical incident scenarios, so students can develop the skills needed to meet urgent industry demand and strengthen the UK\u2019s cyber resilience<\/em>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Security Operations Centre will give students the chance to work with industry partners such as Battle Lab, ESET and JP Morgan to ensure their learning is based on real-world needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uniquely, the centre will also explore ways to support the psychological wellbeing of cyber professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We are seeing high levels of burnout in the industry,<\/em> which is being exacerbated by the intensity of AI-driven attacks,\u201d said Vasilis Katos, Professor in Cyber Security at BU. \u201cSo, unlike many other cyber centres,<em>\u00a0we will be integrating mental health support into cyber resilience programmes.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding will also be used for university staff and students to run training courses for members of the public and local businesses as part of the Dorset Digital Skills Partnership, further helping to build up cyber resilience locally. These training opportunities will include skills bootcamps, employer-designed programmes and new flexible short courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Small and Medium-sized Enterprises make up 99.8% of all businesses in Dorset,\u201d<\/em> Professor Jiang explained. \u201cThis means the facility will play a particularly vital role in upskilling the workforce in our local community and support regional and national economic growth strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Christos Gatzidis, Dean of the Faculty of Media, Science and Technology at BU, said:\u00a0&#8220;This award recognises the strengths of Bournemouth University in the area of cyber security and enables the development of new and very specialised infrastructure.
